To the north of the range of mountains that stretch across the province from the Serranía de Ronda to the sierras of the Axarquía lies a territory which is a watershed between east and west Andalusia, between the Andalusia of the Guadalquivir and that of the Mediterranean.
Its central location has favoured the development here of the region’s main hub of terrestrial communications, providing a natural corridor which has for centuries channelled these communications between Upper and Lower Andalusia, between Granada and Seville, bringing with it extensive intermingling of peoples and cultures.
